The Tappin’ Roots Internship is an important part of Tryon Creek’s commitment to providing all people a chance to learn, grow and connect to the park's nature and culture.

This partnership program allows youth, especially youth of color who often are underrepresented and do not get a chance to partake in quality programs a chance to have positive experiences in a beautiful, urban forest.

The Tappin’ Roots mission is to use storytelling, mentorship, career exploration, place-based learning, and healing practices to educate, train and empower the next generation of environmental and community leaders. The vision is to bring young Black, Brown and Indigenous youth closer to nature and closer to understanding their history and recognizing they are a vital part of the greater Oregon community. Tryon Creek recognizes and respects the contributions of African Americans to the development of Oregon and their historic connection to the land and the Indigenous communities already living there. Tryon Creek also works with community partners to acknowledge social justice, identity and deconstructing colonial power structures through authentic partnerships with diverse communities. The world is changing and there is a need for communities to positively intersect with each other and help one another grow; we must be inclusive to all in order to maintain a future existence.

The work that Tappin’ Roots does not only inspires youth of color to see a place for them at the park and in nature;  it also affords youth exposure to possible careers working in parks, environmental education, or other pathways that will lead youth to be the essential members of the community they were born to be. Representation matters and when youth can see others who look like them sharing common interests and concerns, you have created an inclusive community that brings out the best in everyone, therefore strengthening the community for future generations.
