Friends of Tryon Creek State Park

Join us for another amazing summer at Tryon Creek! We offer half day camps with songs, walks, and nature crafts for preK-1st grade. Our full day camps for children entering 1st through 6th grades include forest explorations, games, and science experiments. We have expanded our overnight camps to including a 'Wild & Local Edibles' camp, two service camps and a 'State Parks Tour' camp. If you are a high school student, volunteer as an Assistant Counselor.


SPECIAL SUMMER EVENT: Family Evening at Nature Day Camp
Do you ever wish that you could go to camp?  Come join us for Family Evening and Nature Day Camp, a new program for the whole family! During this 2 ½ hr evening program you will sing songs, hike along trails, make crafts, and share in all that makes camp magical.  

Session I: July 8 and 22
Session II: August 7 and 21

To be waitlisted for a class, please send in your registration form wi`th payment. We will process payment if a space becomes available for your child. We are unable to answer waitlisted questions over the phone. If a space becomes available, we will call you directly. ***Kindly give us 3 weeks to process your form and send confirmation. * In order to receive the members' discount, family membership must be current at the time of camp. Family memberships may be purchased with registration for $40 and the discount applied immediately.

Camp Descriptions

Half Day (Pre-k - 1st)
Note: There is no extended care at noon for the half day camps.

Nature Discovery Camp
Preschool (ages 4 & 5)
9:00 - 12:00

Awaken and build upon your child’s natural curiosity and affection for living things in this introductory camp. Every day children will use a different sense to explore the forest. Activities include finding and observing wild creatures, sensory exploration, singing, storytelling, games and crafts.

Nature Explorer Camp
Kindergarten - Grade 1
9:00 - 12:00

Beautiful wings, catchy songs, amazing adaptations, we will learn about all of these and more as we investigate the wonderful world of insects! Exploring the park in small groups, we discover the rich variety of species that make Tryon Creek State Park their home. Further activities include stories, crafts, science experiments, and songs.

Full Day (1st - 6th)

Earth Cycles – Up and Down, Around & Around
Grades 1,2,3
9:00 - 3:00

Follow the songs of birds and eddies as you wander along trails lush with ferns. Each morning will be spent with the same small group, hiking trails, playing in a meadow, and exploring the creek sides to explore the many cycles of the forest. Each afternoon, children choose from a variety of forest games, science experiments, sensory activities, and natural arts and crafts projects to complete their day.

Adaptations to Survive - Trunks, Teeth, and Tentacles
Grades 2,3,4
9:00 - 3:00

Why does the lamprey have so many teeth? What animal uses its tentacles to smell? We begin each day with a small group morning hike, discovering the special adaptations of a unique forest creature. Each afternoon, we select activities during two sessions with options such as theater, microscopes, expedition hikes, forest games, and arts and crafts.

Natural Communities – Exploring a New Land
Grades 3, 4, 5, 6
9:00 - 3:00

Where are the salmonberry thickets of your land? What will you bring to barter? Each small group will spend mornings diving into their own territory of the park. Legends, plays, songs and games will build cohesion in each group. Larger group activities include a survival game in the meadow, free choice afternoon activities, and closing ceremony. This camp is intended for older students who are ready for a more in-depth exploration of Tryon Creek State Park.

Wild & Local Edibles
Visit Local farms/producers and Thursday overnight
Grades 5, 6, 7

Come learn the secrets of plants! Learn local wild edibles and journey to a nearby farm to collect fresh, local produce. Camp out at Tryon Creek State Park and cook a delicious meal.

Earth in Motion
Thursday beach overnight
Grades 6, 7, 8
9:00 - 3:00

Discover the forces that have shaped the landscape of Tryon Creek State Park. Follow the path of glacial floods, lava flows, and landslides as they shape the canyon. Spend a day reveling in basalt columns and waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge. Study plate tectonics and erosion on an overnight trip to the coast.

State Parks Tour
Full week overnight
Grades 7, 8, 9
9:00 - 3:00

Climb to the top of ancient lava flows, play in coastal waves, wander through groves of ancient trees. Join us for a week long trip across NW Oregon learning about the ecology and mysteries of local state parks.

Forest Ecology
Thursday backpack overnight
Grades 6, 7, 8
9:00 - 3:00

Find the secret grove of the oldest trees in Tryon Creek. Create your own plant journal with local species from Tryon Creek. Visit deep forests and learn their secrets. On Thursday, backpack into an old-growth forest on Mt. Hood, tell stories, and learn the basics of low impact camping.

Life of a Stream
Canoe trip and Thursday overnight
Grades 5, 6, 7
9:00 - 3:00

Follow the winding path of Tryon Creek from its headwaters to the great Willamette River. Investigate stream life and measure the currents of the creek. Venture into a new ecosystem on a canoe trip in a local waterway. Camp out at Milo McIver State Park on the Clackamas River after visiting a fish hatchery.

Survival Skills
Wednesday & Thursday overnight
Grade 6, 7, 8
9:00 - 3:00

What does it take to survive in the wild? Learn the basics of plant identification, local cultural history, and outdoor safety at Tryon Creek Then explore edible plants, shelter building, animal tracking, and fire building at Milo McIver State Park.

Spend a week at Tryon Creek helping the park you love! We‘ll begin with fun games and team building work for our group then spend a couple of days on service work here in the park. Finish with a couple of fun day trips to celebrate all our hard work.

Camp Policies and General Information

Age/Grade Level

Age or grade level refers to the age or grade child will be as of September of 2008.

Extended Care

Extended care is offered from the hours of 8-9 am and 3-5 pm for full day and overnight camps. Charge is $5/hour, per day, per child. Preregistration is required.
Note: There is no extended care at noon for the half day camps.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available based upon need. For information and an application, check the ‘please send me a sholarship application’ box on the registration form. Complete scholarship applications must be received before May 16, 2008.

Staff

Our staff are enthusiastic, dedicated, experienced individuals who are professionally trained in camp skills, outdoor education, and child development. They come to us with excellent teaching skills and a strong sensativity to the needs of children.

Payment Options

Mail in your completed registration form with a check or credit card information. Fax in your registration form with your credit card information. Completed registration forms with full payment will be processed immediately and you will receive a confirmation within 2-3 weeks.
